On Oct. 10, 1871, Buffalo County voters located the county seat at Gibbon, and the first Buffalo County Courthouse was built on this site in 1873. Handmade brick in the base, made from local clay, came from this courthouse after it was razed in 1909. On Oct. 13, 1874, Buffalo County voters relocated the county seat to Kearny. Hand-hewn stone in the base came from the Kearney Courthouse after it was razed in 1975.
