The Holcombe Site, or Holcombe Beach, in Sterling Heights, Michigan, preserves evidence of Paleo-Indian occupation from about 11,000 years ago. Discovered in 1961 by Jerome DeVisscher and Edward J. Wahla, it was later confirmed by radiocarbon dating and extensively excavated by University of Michigan archaeologists over five years. The site yielded many artifacts, especially the small fluted projectile points now called Holcombe points, along with flint chips and bone fragments. Situated on the shore of a small glacial lake, it shows that people hunted barren-ground caribou in a cold tundra-like setting and documents changing Indigenous lifeways as the Ice Age ended.
