Consumers Energy's Cooke Hydro facility began operating in 1911 as the first of the six dams on the Au Sable River. The six dams on the Au Sable River can generate up to 41,000 Kw of electricity. The facility was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Wildlife management there is certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, and the site has been the location of a highly successful Michigan native Trumpeter Swan re-establishment program. It is also the site of Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center, which features a 14-foot bronze statue dedicated to the pioneer spirit and efforts of Michigan lumbermen.
