Boreal Mountain Resort in Soda Springs near Lake Tahoe is a relatively small ski area owned by Powdr Corporation, but it has become notable for offering the region’s only night skiing and for reliably opening early in the Northern California season. In 2017, it was the first resort to open in California. The resort is especially known for terrain parks and freestyle features, a focus that helped draw national attention when it hosted the US Snowboarding Grand Prix in 2009. Over time it also expanded beginner and family facilities and developed into a year-round sports destination with tubing, Woodward Tahoe, summer mountain biking, skateparks, parkour areas, and dirt jump lines.
