Ghost Ranch in north-central New Mexico spans 21,000 acres within the Piedra Lumbre and is known for its striking cliffs, its role in Georgia O'Keeffe's life and art, and its later use as a retreat and education center. Part of a 1766 Spanish land grant, the area depended on water from the Rito del Yeso and later gained a reputation through local stories of rustling, violence, hidden gold, and hauntings that shaped its name. Developed as a dude ranch in the early 20th century, it was donated to the Presbyterian Church in 1955. It is also a major Triassic fossil site and became a National Natural Landmark in 1976.
