Val Verde County was formed from Crockett, Kinney, and Pecos counties, created on March 24, 1885, and organized on March 31, 1885. It was named in honor of the battle fought at Val Verde, near Fort Craig, New Mexico, on February 19, 1862. Del Rio is the county seat.
