The First Presbyterian Church of Blackwood was the first church established in Gloucester Township in Camden County, N.J. The land on which it stands was purchased from John Blackwood, the area's largest landowner. The founding fathers of the First Presbyterian Church of Blackwoodtown erected a log meeting house in 1751 that stood until 1801. After the congregation outgrew it, a new church was built in 1848 directly behind the present edifice. That building served the community until 1856, when additional land was purchased, and in 1861 a stone structure was erected that now forms part of the front of the present church. Major Peter Cheeseman, Mr. Benjamin Chestnut, and Mr. John Blackwood played leading roles in establishing the existing church.
