In the early 1900s, as homesteaders were drawn to the rolling, fertile land of Idaho’s Camas Prairie, John, Jake, and Gib Eimers moved from Albion, Illinois, to Grangeville, and their sisters Elsie Eimers Bunting, Helen Eimers Soltman, and Lydia Eimers Marshall later joined them. The Eimers siblings became active in business and in the social and political life of the community. John Eimers, born in 1876, drove west in 1904, stayed briefly in Lewiston, then farmed on the Camas Prairie, operated a hardware store, worked as a cashier at the First National Bank and Bank of Camas Prairie, and served as Postmaster, Idaho County Sheriff, Idaho County Auditor, and Idaho State Representative before his death in 1954. Jake Eimers arrived in 1905 and took part in the business and political life of the Camas Prairie as Grangeville Mayor, Idaho County Commissioner and Sheriff, a partner in Miller Hardware with Al Urbahn, and later an operator of insurance and farm implement businesses. Gib Eimers came to Grangeville in 1913, owned and operated several businesses, served as an Idaho State Senator, Idaho County Commissioner, City Councilman, and Grangeville Mayor, and strongly supported school sports. Lydia Eimers Marshall, born in 1884, left Albion in 1929, worked first for a probate judge and then in the Idaho County Treasurer’s office, was elected Idaho County Treasurer in 1946, held that office until 1954, and died in 1980. Helen Eimers Soltman, who lived from 1891 to 1986, worked at the bank and courthouse before opening her own ladies’ apparel business and was active in fundraising for the local hospital. Elsie Eimers Bunting, who lived from 1882 to 1948, traveled with her husband Louis by Reo touring car from Albion to the Camas Prairie in 1919, settled near what is now Grangeville’s Pioneer Park, and was active in civic and social clubs.
