Late on Nov. 26, 1864, Kilpatrick’s cavalry division of the U.S., covering the left of Gen. Sherman’s army on its March to the Sea, camped at Sylvan Grove while Murray’s brigade covered the rear. At 2:00 A.M., Wheeler’s Confederate cavalry attacked the outpost, the 8th Indiana Cavalry, and drove it in. Supported by the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, the outpost retired slowly to Murray’s barricaded camp. At daylight, as Kilpatrick moved off on the Waynesboro road, Wheeler renewed the attack, harassed the Union column, caused some losses, and then turned toward Augusta to keep his command between Kilpatrick and that important Confederate munitions center.
