Pilot Island Light stands at the east end of Wisconsin’s Death’s Door passage, marking dangerous waters long troubled by fog and reefs. The lighthouse replaced an earlier Port des Morts Light on nearby Plum Island in 1858, and the station developed an extensive succession of fog signals, from bell to foghorn to steam siren, whistle, and dual diaphones. In October 1892, keeper Martin Knudsen rescued six sailors from a wreck during a gale, an event that helped lead to a U.S. Lifesaving station on Plum Island in 1895. Later electrified and automated, the light is now part of the Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
