Skyline Drive was planned and built as a scenic highway rather than simply a route from one place to another, and it was originally billed as Shenandoah's greatest single feature. Its 35 mph speed limit suits both safety and appreciation of the Blue Ridge, and its twisting, turning design creates places where travelers in the northbound lane toward Front Royal are actually headed due south. From Range View Overlook, numerous peaks stretch along the mountain range, around which Skyline Drive winds on its way south from Front Royal to Rockfish Gap.
