Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in the Texas Panhandle, about 30 miles north of Amarillo, centers on a 10,000-acre reservoir created by Sanford Dam on the Canadian River and is managed within the National Park System, with headquarters in Fritch. In this dry region, the lake became an important public destination for boating, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking, and hunting, and five boat ramps remain open. Its recent history has been shaped by drought and falling water levels, which closed the marina from 2011 to 2013 and reduced visitation from 1.08 million in 2009 to 502,457 in 2012 after a 1984 peak above 1.94 million. It also adjoins Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument.
