The former home of Major W.T. Sutherlin served as the last capitol of the Confederacy from April 3-10, 1865. President Davis stayed there, and the last full cabinet meeting was held there, with Breckinridge alone absent. The Confederate government’s stay in Danville ended when news of Lee’s surrender arrived on April 10.
