Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Kentucky centers on Dewey Lake near Prestonsburg. Founded as Dewey Lake State Park in 1954, it became a resort park in 1962 with the opening of May Lodge and was renamed for Virginia “Jenny” Wiley, whose 1789 capture and 1790 escape made her one of the Big Sandy Valley’s enduring frontier figures. The 2,871-acre park includes 1,100 acres of lake created in 1951 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and named for Admiral George Dewey. Its Appalachian setting supports recreation, lodging, the Jenny Wiley Trail, and a tradition of summer theater that continued until 2019.
