George King, founder and proprietor of Franklin, Indiana, helped lead the establishment of Johnson County in 1822. He founded the First Presbyterian Church, served as postmaster and justice of the peace, and supported Franklin College by donating its original site and serving on its first board of directors from 1835 to 1840. He was the first president of the Cemetery Board and also gave financial support to Hanover College and the American Tract Society.
