Paul P. Harris, founder of Rotary on February 23, 1905, lived from 1868 to 1947 and spent summers in Onekama at the nearby Glen House Hotel. Rotary’s object is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, especially through developing acquaintance as an opportunity for service, upholding high ethical standards in business and professions, recognizing the worthiness of useful occupations, applying the ideal of service in personal, business, and community life, and advancing international understanding, good will, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.
