Gettysburg National Military Park preserves the battlefield of the Battle of Gettysburg, fought July 1 to July 3, 1863, along with related reserve, supply, hospital, aftermath, and commemorative landscapes around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It includes Gettysburg National Cemetery, where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, and holds extensive Civil War artifacts at the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center. Preservation began soon after the battle and passed into federal control in 1895. Today the park balances restoration of the battlefield’s historic appearance with ongoing commemoration, making it a major place of military history, national memory, and landscape preservation in the United States.
