At 537 Warburton Avenue on the west side of the street, G.H. ("Gus") Wagner ran a newsstand and tobacco shop and also sold gasoline and repaired bicycles and automobiles. In a 1905 photograph, bicycles are prominently featured, and Gus also had one of the village's few public telephones. Ben Kalender's stationery store began on the west side of the street and later moved across the street. Many photographs of Hastings, including a 1935 north-looking view of the store, were taken by A.C. Langmuir, a chemist who carefully preserved a detailed photographic record of Hastings in the 1920s and 1930s.
