The Little Crossings referred to the Little Youghiogeny River, now called Castleman’s River, a name George Washington used when he crossed there on June 19, 1755, with General Edward Braddock during the ill-fated expedition to Fort Duquesne in Pittsburgh. Castleman’s River Bridge, formerly called Little Youghiogeny, was erected in 1813 by David Shriver, Jr., superintendent of the Cumberland Road, or National Road. Its eighty-foot span was the largest stone arch in America at the time, and it remained in continuous use from 1813 to 1933.
