At this site in 1893, Dr. Lewis E. Camfield and Ella Woodman Camfield founded Ward Academy and dedicated their lives to building Christian character through church and school. Lewis Emerson Camfield, who lived from 1860 to 1941, was a pioneer missionary, inspiring preacher, beloved teacher, trusted friend, and practical idealist. Ella Woodman Camfield, who lived from 1863 to 1923, was a devoted wife and mother, sympathetic guide to youth, community leader, wise counselor, and woman of letters.
