The Wiawaka bateaux are seven shipwrecked British and colonial flat-bottomed transport boats preserved in Lake George, New York, as an archaeological site. Used during the French and Indian Wars to carry men and supplies on inland waters, the boats were deliberately scuttled in 1758 with plans for recovery the next year, but they were never raised. They remained on the lake bed until archaeological diver Terry Crandall found them in 1963 and 1964 while working under the auspices of the Adirondack Museum. As a clustered group of wartime transport craft, they provide a direct link to Lake George’s military role in the mid-18th century and were recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
