During the bombardment of Fort Sumter from April 12-14, 1861, the garrison defending the fort was commanded by Major Robert Anderson of the First U.S. Artillery and included officers and men from the Corps of Engineers, the Medical Department, the First U.S. Artillery, Band, Company E, Company H, as well as Hospital Steward Edward Wetfieldt and Matron Ann Amella Weitfeildt.
