The Moorhead Cable Tool Rig was the last wooden oil derrick in the U.S. to retire from daily use. It drilled the Moorhead No. 1 well on the Chapman-McAlvane lease in Loving County and has bull wheels and rig irons of a type not made since the 1920s. In its day, it made deep drilling possible. Its pump was steam-driven until 1942, when a 4-cylinder gasoline engine began to run the "Yo-Yo" wheels and walking beam. The well was put on an electric pump in 1966. Given by R.O. Moorhead to the city of Kermit as an exhibit on the history of the Permian Basin oil empire, the rig was moved 35 miles to this site without being dismantled.
