Huff Archeological Site preserves the remains of a prehistoric Mandan village near Huff, North Dakota, on the Missouri River, dating to around 1450, roughly two centuries before European influence reached the region. Covering about 12 acres, it is especially important for the unusually clear survival of its rectangular village plan, including a long defensive ditch, bastions, a central plaza, and a ceremonial structure. The settlement housed Mandan people who farmed and hunted bison, and its strong fortifications show that defense was a major concern. Protected from erosion in the 1960s, it remains one of the best preserved sites of its era in North Dakota.
