Gregory was founded in 1887 when the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company and the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway agreed to build a town at Corpus Christi Junction, where a rail spur led across Nueces Bay to the city. Formal education began there in 1891 with the opening of the first school on a one-acre site donated by the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company adjacent to the McKamey store on the south side of the rail tracks, and Mrs. Baxter was the first teacher. In 1912 the school moved to the present site at 308 N. Gregory Street and a two-room building was constructed. By 1922, after three more rooms had been added on four acres also donated by Coleman Fulton, the district had changed from Common School District No. 4 to an independent school district. The frame building was demolished in 1927 and replaced by a new brick veneer building for grades one through twelve, and later additions included a gymnasium, vocational building, and agriculture building. As Gregory and the surrounding area grew, the school district also expanded: Gregory ISD and McCampbell Ranch School joined in 1947, and in 1950 Gregory ISD and the Portland School District formed the Gregory Portland Consolidated School District. With continued community support, Gregory-Portland ISD grew into an academic institution with high standards.
