Laura Ingalls Wilder was born here on February 7, 1867, in the little gray log house near Pepin, Wisconsin, that she later evoked in the opening of Little House in the Big Woods, the first of her famous Little House books. Late in 1868 or in the spring of 1869, the Ingalls family left Wisconsin and traveled by covered wagon to Kansas, but after finding Kansas to be Indian country, Charles Ingalls brought the family back to the little house near Pepin shortly after Carrie was born in August of 1870. In 1871 Mary and Laura enrolled in the Barry Corner School nearby, and in 1873 the family sold the farm and moved to Minnesota. Laura Ingalls Wilder became widely loved for her delightful writing style and her good homespun philosophy, and reflecting on her rugged frontier youth, she said that although many things had changed since the days when she beat eggs with a fork or cleaned a kerosene lamp, the truths and principles taught by parents remain always true.
