Near the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain in northeastern Arkansas, this historic fire lookout complex centers on a braced metal-frame tower and also includes a residence, a privy, and a vaulted stone storage cellar. A Civilian Conservation Corps crew built all of these structures in 1937 within the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest. The site is notable because the fire watch facility was designed as more than a solitary observation tower: it also provided living quarters, an uncommon arrangement. Its significance was formally recognized when the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
