Pentwater’s first church, built in 1866, was destroyed by fire by 1875, and parishioners from that Methodist church planned to rebuild. The new church was designed by Grand Rapids architects Robins and Barnaby at a cost of $3,500, and before the building was complete, the basement was finished, covered, and used for divine service. The building was finished in 1879. In 1887, church bells were installed in the new steeple built by T. Mero and P. Labonta. Lightning struck the steeple in 1954, but the bells were unharmed and the steeple was covered. A new addition on the south side was completed in 1974, and a new tower was installed in 1980. Stained glass windows were installed in the bell tower in 2002. In 2005, lightning struck the bell tower, but it was promptly repaired, a new addition on the north side was completed, and the church entrance was redone. The entrance stairway faced west until 1924, when it was turned south because Hancock Street was widened in 1927 to become U.S. 31.
