The Bird Cage Theatre was built in 1881 by Billy and Lottie Hutchinson on the site where Marshal Fred White was killed. After the fire of 1881, it became the only other theatre in Tombstone besides Schieffelin Hall and quickly developed into a first class variety theatre that brought professional artists and performers to Tombstone, many from San Francisco. Among its favorites were Jim and Lola Holly, Pearl Ardine, Irene Osborn, and Eddie Foy. Hutchinson was a showman who sometimes staged his own small dramas for the audience, including one in which a heckler was "shot" and a straw body was thrown onto the stage. For a time it successfully brought vaudeville and burlesque shows to the city. Over the years it also operated under names including the Elite and the Olympic, but it closed as a theatre in 1892 and later became a museum in the original 1881 building.
