Castor Hill, a 1,483-foot mountain in New York’s Tug Hill region east of Greenboro, is remembered chiefly for its place in the state’s former forest fire detection system. In 1927, the Conservation Department built an 80-foot Aermotor LS40 steel fire lookout tower there, making the tower the mountain’s defining feature. A land dispute in the 1950s led to the tower’s dismantling in 1961 and its reassembly across the road in the Little John Game Management Area. It remained in use through the 1970 fire lookout season before aerial detection rendered such towers largely obsolete, and it was removed in 1981.
