On November 25, 1863, Govan's Brigade of Cleburne's Division, commanded by Colonel Daniel C. Govan and serving with Douglas' Battery under Lieutenant John H. Bingham, was established late on November 24 on the spur extending eastward from this position, with its left near this point. Throughout the battle on November 25, the brigade and battery maintained a direct fire down the valley and an oblique fire on the slopes where the enemy's left persistently assaulted Tunnel Hill. After the second charge on this position, the consolidated 2nd, 15th, and 24th Arkansas under Lieutenant Colonel E. Warfield were detached from the brigade's left and posted in support of Swett's Battery on top of Tunnel Hill, where they took active part in the desperate fighting until the close of the battle, captured a battle flag during a countercharge, and helped capture several hundred prisoners. Two of Swett's 12-pounders were sent to Douglas' Battery. When Union forces at the center carried Missionary Ridge, the brigade was dispatched to cover Shallowford Road and later withdrew by that route.
