USS Texas, built at Newport News after congressional authorization in 1910, was launched in 1912 and commissioned in 1914. The oldest surviving dreadnought battleship and the only remaining capital ship to serve in both World Wars, she marked a major advance in naval design as the first battleship fitted with 14-inch guns and later pioneered several technologies in U.S. service. After duty off Mexico and with the Grand Fleet in World War I, Texas served as flagship of the United States Fleet. In World War II she escorted convoys and bombarded targets in North Africa, Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Preserved since 1948, she is being restored for Galveston.
