Amos T. Akerman was a lawyer who served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Georgia from 1869 to 1870 and as U.S. Attorney General from 1870 to 1871. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on February 23, 1821, he died in Cartersville, Georgia, on December 21, 1880, and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. He served as a Confederate soldier in the Georgia State Guard in 1864. As U.S. Attorney General in the cabinet of President Ulysses S. Grant, he organized the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted the first civil rights violation case. His residence and law office were on this property.
