B.J. Thomas was a driller and contractor from Pennsylvania who earned the nickname "Dry Hole Ben" because he seldom promoted successful oil wells. His continued faith in paying quantities of oil in Allegany County led him to drill many historic wells, including the "Wildcat Well" on this hillside. He eventually sold his equipment and holdings to O.P. Taylor.
