Kennesaw Mountain, between Marietta and Kennesaw, Georgia, rises 1,808 feet and dominates the surrounding Atlanta-area landscape with its twin summits, Big Kennesaw and Little Kennesaw. Long before it became a regional landmark, it was home to mound-building peoples, then to the Creek and later the Cherokee before removal. Its greatest historical significance came in the Civil War’s 1864 Atlanta campaign, when Union forces under William Tecumseh Sherman made a costly failed assault against Joseph E. Johnston’s Confederates there. Preserved since 1935 as Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, it remains important both for its battlefield history and as a notable natural habitat for migrating songbirds.
