In 1759, while Colonel Montresor constructed Fort George out of limestone, Major General Jeffery Amherst’s army built a star-shaped stockaded fort closer to Lake George. This British complex included an officers’ barracks, a soldiers’ barracks, storehouses, a powder magazine, a sawmill, a large circular garden, and many auxiliary buildings. Much of the wooden fort had decayed by 1765.
