Vasquez Rocks served as a filming backdrop as early as 1905, and the field at this site once held a massive fort-like castle set built in 1956-57 for NBC's series "Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers." The exterior alone cost $117,843.17, not including the interior or set decorations, making it one of the largest known sets in the area's filming history; only the town of "Bedrock" built for Universal's 1994 film "The Flintstones" is identified as having surpassed its scale. Built while the land was still privately owned, the set brought in revenue from studios that used it and became popular with visitors who explored it despite its dramatic heights and lack of safety rails. As filmmaking methods changed, sets, matte painting, forced perspectives of miniatures, and CGI all helped create new worlds here. The deteriorating fort was removed in 1969 for safety reasons, but it remains preserved in memories, photographs, films, and television shows including "Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers," "Star Trek"'s episode "Arena," "The Wild Wild West," and "Fort Utah."
