The classic television series "Sea Hunt," which aired from 1958 to 1961 and starred Lloyd Bridges, was set in the ocean but filmed many of its scenes at Silver Springs. The show inspired many people to take up diving as a hobby. Ivan Tors directed and produced the series and recruited Ricou Browning to direct many of the underwater sequences. While at Silver Springs, Browning got the idea for Flipper, and he and Jack Cowden wrote a book about a boy and a Florida dolphin. Although the book was never published, Ivan Tors turned the story into a film, and its success led to the launch of "Flipper," one of television's most popular shows.
