In August 1777, Gen. Herkimer took a 40 mile route from August 3 to 6 to relieve Fort Stanwix. On August 6, the Battle of Oriskany was fought between Herkimer's men and St. Leger with his Indians, and it was the turning point of the Revolution. Old Fort Schuyler, though abandoned at the time, sheltered the wounded General Herkimer during the night of August 6, 1777, on his return journey after the Battle of Oriskany.
