This gardener's cottage, seen in the 1870s before its 1905 renovation, contains remnants of what has been called the Neutral Forge, a Revolutionary War blacksmith's shop located, like all of Hastings, in the no-man's land between British and American lines. It was visited by both sides, though not at the same time. Next to the shop once stood the landmark black walnut Treaty Tree, seen in a 1920s photograph. Nearby is also a restored 1929 playhouse that a cottage resident built for his granddaughter.
