The Chesapeake and Ohio Aqueduct was the largest of the eleven C&O aqueducts. Finished in 1833 under Principal Engineer Alfred Cruger, it was constructed of quartzite from Sugarloaf Mountain. It served until 1924, when commercial operations ceased after a flood, and it is administered by the National Park Service.
