Dixie Caverns is a commercial show cave in the Riverside community of Roanoke County, Virginia, about four miles west of Salem. A limestone solution cave in a hill above the surrounding area, it was discovered in 1920 by two farm boys after their dog, Dixie, fell through an opening into the cave. They named the caverns for the dog, and guided tours began in 1923. The cave is known especially for the Wedding Bell, a bell-shaped flowstone formation beneath which weddings have been held, joining the cave’s geology to a local tradition that has shaped its identity as a visitor attraction.
