John Jones, a soldier of the Revolution, was born Feb. 14, 1735, and died Jan. 11, 1793. He served as vestryman of St. Andrew’s Parish from 1775 to 1779, justice from 1760 to 1793, sheriff from 1773 to 1775, clerk from 1789 to 1793, a member of the House of Burgesses from 1772 to 1773, and a member of the Virginia Senate from 1776 to 1789, including service as Speaker of the Senate from 1788 to 1789. He also served in the Virginia Convention of 1788 and rose by successive steps in the militia to become County Lieutenant from 1778 to 1789.
