From the 1930's to the late 50's, Verner McGee operated a meat market here, and he and his wife Virginia once lived above the store. In those days, "Son" could always be found with his sidekick, a short-haired terrier who rode shotgun on daily deliveries into the countryside. Earlier, in the early 1900's, partners Will Le McElroy and R.T. Agnew were retail merchants and cotton buyers in this building as The Agnew-McElroy Co. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
