From 1840 to 1963, this was the site of Liberty Street Presbyterian Church (African). Its first pastor was Henry H. Garnet from 1840 to 1848. The church hosted local, state, and national abolitionist meetings and was a site of the Draft Riot in 1863. It was also associated with Beta Psi Boulé, Sigma Pi Phi.
