Two miles west stood the district seat of the Jackson Purchase area in 1818, an area now comprising Kentucky's eight westernmost counties and Tennessee's twenty westernmost counties. It was settled in 1821, when a U.S. Public Land Office opened there. It served as the Calloway County seat from 1822 to 1842, after which the county seat was moved to Murray.
