Chartered in 1801 as the S.C. College, the institution opened January 10, 1805. Its entire student body volunteered for Confederate service in 1861, and it served as a Soldiers' Hospital from 1862 to 1865. It was rechartered as the U. of S.C. in 1865, came under Radical control from 1873 to 1877, and was closed from 1877 to 1880. It then became the College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts from 1880 to 1882, S. C. College from 1882 to 1887, U. of S. C. from 1887 to 1890, S. C. College from 1890 to 1905, and U. of S. C. in 1906, a faithful index to the ambitions and fortunes of the state.
