Lyon Mountain, at 3,820 feet in northern New York’s Adirondack Park, is the highest point in Clinton County and was named for early settler Nathaniel Lyon, who arrived from Vermont in 1803. Its slopes feed several drainage systems within the Saint Lawrence watershed, making it an important regional divide. The summit is best known for the Lyon Mountain Fire Observation Station. Fire watching began there in 1910, and a 35-foot steel tower built in 1917 still stands. Observation continued until 1988, before closure in 1989 as aircraft replaced towers. Protected after a 2005 land sale, the mountain remains a hiking destination and a notable link to New York forest conservation.
