An eighteenth-century abandoned iron ore mine at Durham now serves as an important refuge for several species of bats. With community support, Heritage Conservancy has protected the bats, the mine, and the surrounding conservation area since acquiring it in 2001, and remains committed to ensuring permanent protection of this critical habitat and historic site.
