The Western Museum of Mining and Industry in Colorado Springs preserves the mining history and industrial technology of the American West through indoor exhibits and large outdoor machinery displays. Founded in 1970 from Frederick M. Farrar’s private collection and later expanded by major donations, it took its current name in 1973 as its focus sharpened. Its permanent site developed with the Yellow Jacket II stamp mill building, opened in 1980, and the main museum building, opened in 1982. Notable exhibits include the operational Yellow Jacket II, a powerful Corliss steam engine, a Downie steam pump, and other equipment that shows how mining and ore processing worked in practice.
